Meet the Artist | Sean Atmos on Embracing Independence and Going Solo

My name is Sean, I work under the name Sean Atmos. My practice spans original paintings, printmaking, clothing design, large-scale public and commercial murals, immersive art experiences, and building exhibitions. While my work crosses many boundaries, I find that 'Artist/Designer' best captures the breadth of what I do.

My role as an artist is to let my interests shine through and create something authentic, while my role as a designer is to understand and identify project requirements and bring my own level of creative expertise to the table.

“I have been in the creative industry for many years, initially as part of an anonymous art collective in Dublin, where I contributed to several large-scale mural projects and a dozen creative campaigns. During this time, we collaborated with high-profile brands to make ends meet, creating large-scale painted advertisements, with the hope of one day thriving solely on our own creative vision. While the experience was both challenging and rewarding, I eventually realised I was dedicating precious time and energy to building a portfolio that I couldn’t fully claim as my own. This led me to the natural decision to pursue a solo career.”

The next step for me was to discover my own form of creative identity after years of collaborative and anonymous work. I began experimenting with graphic lettering, layering letterforms, and rendering them in spray paint, a medium I was already very familiar with.

My interests were broad, but above all, I liked geometry, typography, and color—especially when people used color in bold and interesting ways. After developing a style that resonated with me, I began exploring and dissecting letterforms and their underlying rules. I often used words that reflected where I was in life as an artist, drawing on my interest in psychology and mindfulness outside of art. I paired this with a solid understanding of design principles and the ability to paint clean, precise lines and shapes.

“The greatest reward from years of creating artwork anonymously was the freedom to explore a wide range of styles without being tied to any single one. My goal was to stay true to this with my own work, and explore a range of things that interest me.’’

Since going solo, I've had the opportunity to explore and transcend my work across various mediums, from a humble 4x4m studio to collaborations with brands like H&M, Kildare Village and Guinness. I've also created work for global tech and creative leaders such as Google and The Tenth Man, among others. This has allowed me to let my imagination run wild while working on a diverse range of projects.
